My Teaching Style
During my 32 years of teaching, much has evolved and changed as more and more people are taking up the practise of Yoga. Doctors are recommending it to their patients, but are not always aware of the many different styles and approaches. An older beginner, depending on what shape they’re in, could potentially sustain an injury in a vigorous Vinyasa class. The practise needs to be in alignment with the individual.
The purpose of Yoga is to free us from suffering. The more we become aware of how we move, how we breathe, how we think, whether during our practise on the mat or in our daily lives, the more we’re able to make adjustments in our habits and find better, more conscious ways of being.
My approach is to guide students in moving slowly and mindfully, really tuning in to how each movement feels from inside. By repeating a movement several times, the body, having dropped it’s resistance, is able over time to become more flexible, more spacious, more graceful. Each Yoga session can be considered a meditation in motion, the mind and body In a state of union.
I like to offer a generous period of deep relaxation at the end of class. I believe it’s the most important part of the practise and delivers the most benefit to our nervous system which is responsible for our overall wellbeing.

Testimonials

The practice of yoga has helped me tremendously over the years. The various positions and movements help to ease my general stiffness and allow me to go about daily activities.
Kirsten's style of teaching is soothing and most encouraging. I feel completely safe moving my body under her guidance. Holding my breath has always been an issue for me especially when I am stressed. I have used the yoga breathing techniques that she introduced to us as a means to relax and calm any anxieties. I especially like the fact that she mixes up the routines so that I am not getting bored with the same repetitive movements. DVDs or YouTube sessions do not give you that personal attention that she provides.

Every week I marvel at how you are able to so seemingly effortlessly lead our little group through a wonderful 1 1/2 hour combination of breathing and stretching. Thank you for another really great experience tonight!
It was exactly what I needed.

Kirsten’s style is soft spoken, enthusiastic, reassuring if you feel awkward and insecure.
I like the gentle tempo of class, encouraging and no pressure to “perform”. Since starting her classes, I’m a lot more flexible, feel stronger, stand tall and shoulders down (instead of tight around my ears!)

I appreciate how good Kirsten’s class makes me feel (mentally, physically and spiritually) and that I always feel safe (i.e. I’m not going to hurt myself).
My body sometimes re-adjusts itself during class. I feel more confident that my body can make corrective realignments when I am relaxed and open. I am getting stronger. I feel more balanced and more flowing. I am regaining flexibility and stamina.
